Sheinbaum recognizes indigenous women: 'They are the essence of Mexico'

On Indigenous Women's Day , President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that Indigenous women are the essence of Mexico .

As part of this anniversary—established in 1983 in memory of Bartolina Sisa, an Aymara warrior who led part of the Indigenous resistance against Spanish rule in Bolivia and was executed in La Paz in 1782—the Mexican president announced that the Indigenous Women's Handbook has now been translated into 35 of the country's 68 Indigenous languages. This is part of her government's project to vindicate Indigenous women.

"In this racism that prevailed in Mexico for so many years, and that still exists in many people, indigenous women were the most discriminated against, for being women , for the color of their skin and for being indigenous , and we want to vindicate indigenous women . Because, first of all, they are the essence of Mexico , they are the ones who transmit the culture, in fact it is called the mother tongue, because it is transmitted from mother to children, mainly," she said.

At the same time, she emphasized that indigenous women have all the rights that any other woman or man has—special rights, because we are women, but "we all have rights."

Regarding the project, Maria de los Ángeles Gordillo Castañeda , general director of Intercultural and Bilingual Indigenous Education of the Ministry of Public Education ( SEP ), said that up to the cut, the audiovisual format had been translated into 27 languages and the written format into 35.

"And we continue working with 27 more languages in 18 states," he added.

From the current work, most of the languages are concentrated in Oaxaca , Hidalgo , State of Mexico and Chiapas .

Meanwhile, today, the national flag will be fully raised in all government offices in memory of Bartolina Sisa , as part of the constitutional change to commemorate women's anniversaries.
