New traffic closures in Madrid in August due to roadworks affecting the M-30, Castellana, and A-5 highways.

The paving works on the M-30, the undergrounding of the A-5, and Paseo de la Castellana will cause new traffic disruptions in Madrid. The first disruptions will occur this Sunday, August 3rd, followed by further disruptions beginning on Monday, August 4th. Madrid City Council has designed alternative routes to avoid the closures. Furthermore, some EMT public transport routes will modify their routes while these surface works are being carried out. Along with these occasional traffic disruptions, others continue, such as the one caused by the expansion works on Line 11, which prevents the connection between Plaza de Conde de Casal and the A-3, in both directions. This situation will continue in some parts of the city only during the summer months, but in other cases it will extend for several months.

The first of the effects will start on Sunday due to the second phase of repairs to the pavement of the M-30, which will affect traffic in Embajadores, Begoña, and Avenida de los Sagrados Corazones. Resurfacing work will not be completed until August 11th, and will take place both day and night. Thus, between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on August 3rd and 4th, milling work will begin on the surface of the Embajadores tunnel. Once completed, the new aggregate will be poured between 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 10th, and Monday, August 11th. To carry out these works, the tunnel will be closed in the direction entering the capital. Alternative routes are recommended: joining the outer carriageway of the M-30 northbound and entering Madrid via the A-4.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, August 5, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., work will continue to improve the road surface on the Begoña and San Luis bridges. During the day, the damaged or poor condition portion of the road will be removed from both areas. Once this entire section has been removed, the new road surface will be applied on Thursday, August 7, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The Begoña Bridge will have its entire deck closed, with alternative routes opening up along Paseo de la Castellana and the Mauricio Legendre Bridge. The deck will also be closed on the San Luis Bridge, although alternative access will be provided in the left lane in the opposite direction between the adjacent roundabouts. On the Avenida de los Sagrados Corazones bridge, the operation will be carried out on Wednesday, August 6 . Thus, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., the deteriorated asphalt will be removed and replaced with a fresh layer of tar on Friday, August 8, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The alternate routes available will be Serrano Galvache Street, the service road on the outer carriageway of the M-30 northbound highway, and Arturo Soria and Costa Rica Streets.

Elsewhere in the region , work to bury the A-5 will force the closure of the underpass of the Southwest Highway on August 4th, which connects Paseo de Extremadura with the roundabout on Calle Dante and Avenida de Portugal, the connection point with the detour to the Amusement Park. This closure is due to the start of work to create the new Amusement Park bypass. The City Council plans to have this new connection operational by September and thus demolish the current interchange, a necessary step to continue with the tunnel construction. These adjustments will also affect pedestrians, as the underpass will be unusable, forcing the use of the Avenida de Portugal roundabout to replace that route.

In addition, on August 7, the A-5 will have a new detour in the southern area, from Sanchorreja to the new junction with the Batán neighborhood. This route is being implemented to permanently close the current underpass used by vehicles and pedestrians. From this date, to cross from the Lucero neighborhood to the Batán neighborhood and access the highway, users must travel via Carlina Street or Villagarcía Street. The closure of this tunnel will prevent pedestrian traffic between the two areas, with the introduction of the special EMT service, SE 3, as an alternative to connect the two neighborhoods. These restrictions are in addition to those implemented during works such as the closure on July 18 of the A-5 tunnel that connects to the M-30 subway under Avenida de Portugal in the direction of entry into the capital. This closure is expected to continue until the end of August to install the underfloor slab and pipelines.

The second phase of the undergrounding of Castellana Avenue will begin on Monday , closing traffic in the center lanes in both directions until December 2026, although traffic will remain on the side roads. To avoid this area, drivers wishing to take the M-607 have three possible routes. The first runs from Plaza de Cuzco along Sor Ángela de la Cruz and Valle de Mena streets to Avenida de la Ilustración. The second departs from Plaza de Castilla and continues along Avenida de Asturias and Ginzo de Limia. The last consists of turning off at the intersection of Castellana and Monforte de Lemos to Ginzo de Limia and taking Avenida de la Ilustración. Conversely, to access the capital via this road, it is recommended to take the exit toward Avenida de la Ilustración and continue along Monforte de Lemos to Paseo de la Castellana, or opt for Ginzo de Limia, Avenida de Asturias, and Plaza de Castilla.

Likewise, those heading towards the A-1 and M-11 can depart from Plaza de Cuzco and take the detour along Avenida de Alberto Alcocer and Costa Rica until they reach the M-30, or head from Plaza de Castilla to the streets Mateo Inurria, Caídos de la División Azul, Cuesta del Sagrado Corazón, or Avenida de Pío XII, to connect with the M-30. In the opposite direction, travelers wishing to access Castellana from the M-30 can use the Pío XII tunnel exit, continue along that avenue, and continue along Plaza de Castilla. Another option is to use the detours along Avenida de Pío XII and Alberto Alcocer to Plaza de Cuzco.

The second phase of the undergrounding of the Castellana also requires modifications to public transport routes. The Municipal Transport Company (EMT) "will maintain its usual routes, although 13 urban lines will be affected: 11 daytime lines, one nighttime line, and a special holiday service," according to City Hall. Meanwhile, 34 intercity bus lines that operate on the A-1 and M-607 highways will introduce changes to their usual routes and will temporarily relocate stops in Ginzo de Limia and around Cuatro Torres to facilitate access to La Paz and the metro. The six night bus routes will maintain their normal routes. In addition, it has been decided to reinforce service on Metro Line 10 between 6:05 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on weekdays.
