Barely three weeks after the Geneva agreement, Beijing and Washington are once again facing off as adversaries. Both sides accuse each other of breaching the agreement – and their dispute is no longer just about tariffs.

By his own admission, Donald Trump was just trying to be nice. By reaching a "quick agreement" in the trade dispute with China in mid-May in Geneva, he hoped to provide relief: for the supposedly collapsing Chinese economy , but also for the fragile global economy. But less than three weeks later, there is no longer any talk of easing tensions between the two largest economies. Instead, both sides are hurling accusations at each other: Washington accuses Beijing of blocking promised raw material exports. China counters that the USA was the first to break its word with new technology restrictions.
