US MARKETS/Mixed - Amazon shares rise sharply with AI deal
DJ MARKETS USA/Mixed - Amazon gains significantly with AI deal
DOW JONES--Wall Street presented a mixed picture at the start of the week. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down slightly, the Nasdaq Composite rose on new news from the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, further fueling recent euphoria. Investors also continued to anticipate a largely positive earnings season, it was reported. US stocks recorded their best October performance in many years.
Traders also attributed the buying mood to a cooling of trade tensions between the US and China and the recent solid earnings reports from the technology sector. AMD, among others, will release its financial results on Tuesday after the close of trading. "Technology remains in focus as Palantir and AMD report this week, both showing strong gains since the beginning of the year driven by investor optimism surrounding AI and chip demand," said analyst Matt Britzman of Hargreaves Lansdown.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5 percent to 47,337 points. The S&P 500, however, rose 0.2 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.5 percent. According to initial data, on the NYSE, there were 1,185 advancing stocks (Friday: 1,596) and 1,568 declining stocks (1,186). 73 stocks (66) closed unchanged.
Amazon's AI deal significantly increases its market share
Amazon shares climbed 4.0 percent. OpenAI has secured computing power from Amazon under a multi-year, $38 billion contract. The partnership is the first between the startup and the cloud giant. Amazon uses Nvidia chips in its data centers and expects OpenAI to have access to the full computing capacity agreed upon in the contract by the end of next year. Nvidia shares rose 2.2 percent.
Kimberly-Clark is acquiring Kenvue for $48.7 billion. The health and personal care brand was only spun off from Johnson & Johnson in 2023. Kenvue shares jumped 12.3 percent, while Kimberly-Clark shares fell 14.6 percent.
Pfizer shares gained 0.2 percent. The pharmaceutical company announced it has filed a second lawsuit against Metsera and Novo Nordisk. The US corporation stated that Novo Nordisk's attempt to outbid Pfizer in the acquisition of Metsera violates antitrust law. Pfizer reached an agreement with Metsera (-3.7%) in September for a takeover of up to $7.3 billion.
Following the release of its financial results, Berkshire Hathaway's B shares fell 0.4 percent. The conglomerate, owned by investment legend Warren Buffett, increased its profit by 17 percent in the quarter. BioNTech shares closed virtually unchanged after initially strong gains. The figures had been convincing, and BioNTech also raised its outlook.
The day's economic data presented a mixed picture. According to the ISM, activity in US manufacturing slowed in October. However, a survey by S&P Global indicated that US manufacturing activity increased in October compared to the previous month.
The dollar showed a slight gain on the foreign exchange market. The dollar index rose by 0.1 percent. The overall support came from declining expectations of interest rate cuts, it was said.
Bond yields ultimately showed little change. The yield on ten-year bonds stood at 4.10 percent. After US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell recently attempted to dampen expectations of a third consecutive interest rate cut, futures markets are currently pricing in a 67 percent probability of a rate cut in December, down from 94 percent a week ago.
The price of WTI crude oil remained largely unchanged after a volatile period. There had been slight declines at one point, triggered by expectations of lower demand. OPEC+ has decided to pause production increases in the first quarter of next year, anticipating seasonally lower demand. Analysts at ANZ suspect that OPEC+ is also aware that additional oil would be difficult to sell on the market.
The price of gold rose slightly. The troy ounce gained 0.2 percent to $4,010, thus remaining above the $4,000 mark.
