Chinese automakers have apparently adapted and are increasingly supplying plug-in hybrids to Europe due to EU tariffs on electric cars. China's exports of plug-in hybrids to the EU surged in the first half of 2025, according to the Handelsblatt newspaper (Monday), citing data from industry service provider Dataforce.
Manufacturers such as BYD and Lynk&Co sold a combined total of almost 33,000 plug-in hybrids in the EU. This represents an increase of 364 percent compared to the same period last year.
The EU Commission had imposed additional tariffs of up to 45 percent on electric cars manufactured in China. Brussels justified the surcharges by citing subsidies for Chinese carmakers that unfairly disadvantage European companies. "Many Chinese manufacturers have changed their sales strategies and are increasingly focusing on models that are not subject to additional countervailing duties," Charles Lester, an analyst at London-based e-mobility specialist Rho Motion, told the "Handelsblatt" newspaper.
