Inflation falls to 3.3% in May, CBS flash forecast shows

The annual rate of inflation fell to 3.3% in May, after reaching 4.1% in April as households booked their summer holidays, national statistics agency CBS said on Tuesday.

Despite the fall, inflation has been above 3% for more than a year and is well above the 2% which economists say is best for a healthy economy.

Prices in the Netherlands are also rising faster than the European average of 2.4%. Calculated according to European methods, which do not include the impact of rental housing, the Dutch inflation rate was 3%.

Food price rises are the main motor behind the high rate of inflation and the cost of energy continues to decline, the CBS said.
