A biopic is officially in development, backed by the acclaimed production company behind Slow Horses and The King’s Speech.

Josephine Decker, known for her critically praised biopic Shirley, will direct. The script will be penned by Stacey Gregg, whose credits include Mary and George and Little Birds.

“The film will tell the story of how one young woman from Dublin took on the world, examining how her global fame may have been built on her talent, but her name became synonymous with her efforts to draw attention to the crimes committed by the Catholic Church and the Irish state.”

The project has been in development since the release of Nothing Compares, with BBC Film funding its early stages.

The biopic will focus on O’Connor’s early career, her meteoric rise with Nothing Compares 2 U, and her bold activism. It will also go into her public struggles, including her infamous 1992 Saturday Night Live protest where she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II.

“Sinéad was keen to explore making her memoir into a film and had a raft of ideas about how it would look on screen. She had a huge amount of respect for Demi Moore and thought Niamh Algar was a rising star.”

Saoirse Ronan was also considered, reflecting O’Connor’s desire for authenticity in depicting her Irish roots.
