Michael J. Fox to Make Acting Return After 5 Years
Michael J. Fox is going back to the small screen.
After five years away from acting, the Back to the Future star is set to return to Hollywood in the upcoming third season of Apple TV+’s comedy Shrinking.
“Big feelings incoming,” the 63-year-old captioned a joint Instagram post with the streamer May 15. “Michael J. Fox joins the Shrinking cast as a guest star in season 3.”
While there are no other details on Michael’s upcoming role, the show centers on Jason Segel’s character Jimmy, who works as a therapist alongside Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams’ characters Paul and Gaby, as he navigates life as a now-single dad to a teenage daughter following the sudden death of his wife. The heart-wrenching, yet feel-good comedy was created by Jason, Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein and Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence, who worked with Michael on the late ‘90s comedy Spin City.
For Michael—who went public with his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998—his appearance on Shrinking in 2026 will mark his first on-camera role since he was on the CBS drama The Good Fight in 2020. And the return to television is certain to be a welcomed one, as he has previously been open about his love for acting.
“I was good at it and it’s fun to be good at things,” Michael told ET in November. “It’s really nice if you go into something and you say, ‘I know what to do here, I know what to bring to it.’”
He also noted that working with other actors is one of his favorite parts of the job, adding, “That’s the great thing about acting is it’s collaborative. You work with people that are just amazing.”
As for what drives the five-time Emmy winner to entertain others? He clarified it’s not the praise, but the connection made with audiences.
“People have to be in a position where they’re served or helped by something you did and then they turn around and give you an award,” Michael continued. “The award part I don’t care about as much as having had the opportunity to help them and represent something to the community.”
He added, “I look at a trophy and I don’t think, ‘Wow, that means I’m great.’ It’s like, ‘Wow, I made somebody happy and they gave me this.’”
