The fourth annual Gold House Gala brought out many actors, filmmakers, musicians, activists, authors, and more for its event honoring Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) leaders who have made changes in American culture this year.
Big names including Laufey, Megan Thee Stallion, Jon M. Chu, Jordan Chiles, and more, descended upon the Music Center in Downtown Los Angeles, California, on May 10, to celebrate AAPI achievements. Wicked director Chu, who is a Gold House co-founder, received the A1 in Entertainment and Media award for his blockbuster hit, along with the forthcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good.
“We’re not just guests at the table anymore,” Chu said in his speech. “We built the damn house, and guess what? It’s made of gold, and we’ve got more work to do.”
Chu, who also directed Crazy Rich Asians and In The Heights, also reflected on his career, noting a memorable time working with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who offered him support in the early days of his filmmaking. “I wasn’t quite ready to bring my full Asian self into the spotlight, but never underestimate the power of The Rock planting seed.”
Megan Thee Stallion received the One House Honor for her support of Asian Pacific culture in her most recent work. For her single “Mamushi,” featuring Yuki Chiba, the rapper traveled to Japan to film the music video, which paid homage to several Japanese films. The music video was filmed in part at both Tsurumaki Onsen Jinya and Engaku-ji Temple and features multiple Japanese actors, including Shô Kasamatsu.
The Gold Ensemble Honor was awarded to Moana 2's Auli’i Cravalho, Dana Ledoux Miller, and Dave Derrick Jr., while Laufey received the Billboard Gold Record Honor for her music.
The red carpet was filled with stars showcasing their best looks for the special evening. Here are some of the best looks:
