Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot during a university event in Utah. The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, has been arrested.

Investigators found a bolt-action rifle believed to be the murder weapon, with bullet casings engraved with politically charged messages, including “Hey Fascist, Catch!” and other phrases referencing anti-fascist and cultural themes.

The discovery of inscriptions on the bullet casings recovered from the scene adds a striking and unsettling dimension to the case. Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed that investigators found several bullet casings with messages written on them.

These include provocative phrases such as “Hey fascist! Catch!”, “Bella ciao, bella ciao” an Italian resistance song and a disparaging phrase “if you read this you are gay lmao.”

These inscriptions suggest the suspect may have been expressing strong ideological motivations. “Investigators located a bolt-action rifle concealed in a dark towel,” Cox said. The rifle was identified as a Mauser model 98 in .30-06 caliber and was equipped with a scope.

The Suspect’s Arrest Following Confession to Family Member

Tyler Robinson, the suspect, was apprehended after a family member reported that Robinson had confessed or indicated involvement in the shooting.

This prompt guidance from the family helped swiftly bring the perpetrator into custody. Governor Cox emphasized, “We got him. On the evening of September 11, a family member of Tyler Robinson reached out… with information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident”.

Weapon Used: Bolt-Action Rifle With Political Symbolism

The firearm recovered is an older-model bolt-action rifle, a preferred weapon for precision. Law enforcement officials discovered the rifle in a forested area near the university after tracking the suspect’s movement. FBI statements described the weapon as a high-powered bolt-action rifle wrapped in a dark towel.

The inscriptions on the ammunition suggest the suspect’s ideological leanings, with reported themes around antifascism and transgender ideology.

Investigation Highlights Detailed Planning and Execution

Authorities believe the shooting was meticulously planned. Former FBI agent Brad Garrett remarked, “He likely did that to avoid being seen carrying a firearm while navigating through a neighborhood.” Surveillance footage showed the suspect descending from a rooftop and moving into a wooded area where the rifle was eventually found. “

Local and state law enforcement, along with our federal counterparts… have worked effectively together,” Governor Cox praised the collaborative effort.
