Addams Family Star Anjelica Huston Details Private Past Cancer Battle

Anjelica Huston is sharing her cancer story.
The Addams Family actress shared for the first time that she was diagnosed with cancer after the release of her film John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum in 2019, detailing how her private battle changed her outlook on life.
"That was a very serious moment for me," Anjelica shared in an interview with People published April 9. "I managed to survive it, and I'm proud of myself."
"It's not something that came lightly," she continued. "It came as a big shock, but it made me conscious of what I shouldn't do, of places I shouldn't go. One of those places was taking life too seriously. So now when the opportunity arises, I laugh, and I try not to make a big deal out of things."
While she kept the nature of her diagnosis private, the 73-year-old shared that she's "in the clear" and recently celebrated being officially cancer-free for four years.
"I'm at the four-year mark, and that means so much to me," Anjelica said. "It's a fantastic thing. I'm very proud of myself, and I've been very lucky. My doctors have been wonderful."
When the Oscar winner—who wed sculptor Robert Graham in 1992 and was married to him until he died in 2008—first heard that she had beaten her cancer four years ago, she "just walked in my garden and smelled the roses and thought how clever I was."
As for her decision to share her cancer journey publicly now, Anjelica explained that she sees strength and bravery in being able to celebrate overcoming such a monumental struggle such as with her health.
While Anjelica—the daughter of legendary filmmaker John Huston and Enrica Soma—has kept many aspects of her life out of the spotlight, she recently recounted reconnecting with former partner of 17 years Jack Nicholson, who called her as she was evacuating amid the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.
"I was in a car with three dogs, two cats, and the housekeeper," Anjelica told The Guardian in an interview published Feb. 21, "and he called and asked if I was all right, and if I had someplace I was staying."
She continued, "That’s the bottom line with he and I—when the chips are down, he’s there."

"I loved him," Anjelica—who split from Jack in 1990 after he confessed he'd fathered a child with another woman—went on. "I think in the world that I was living in, it wasn’t disrespectful. It was how he was, and it wasn't so personal. I think as soon as I clocked that, it was all right, I knew how to protect myself. It didn’t make me happy, but I knew what I was doing."
