If you’re looking to make a major transformation, then consider trading in your lengthy locks for a pixie cut. The timeless hairstyle is the epitome of effortless elegance, and you know it’s destined for a comeback when A-listers like Emma Stone are embracing a cropped cut. This time around, the pixie cut is returning with a slightly softer edge, from tousled texture to piecey layers. “What I love about the pixie is how empowering it feels,” says Jerome Lordet, a New York-based hairstylist and owner of Jerome Lordet Salon. “It reveals the face, highlights bone structure, and makes a bold yet refined statement.”

To achieve a modern pixie, Lordet recommends customizing the cut to your face shape, and adding volume at the crown or softness around the ears depending on your features. While this short ‘do is relatively easy to maintain, it does require trims every 4 to 6 weeks to keep the shape intact. But if you're not totally ready to commit, consider something in between a bob and a pixie: a bixie.

2. Three-Tiered Layers

We’re not straying too far from jellyfish haircuts or step mullets this fall. The choppy look is getting a subtle makeover; this time around, we’re layering up in threes—and stars like Gwen Stefani have playfully forayed with the experimental look.

“Three-tiered layers are perfect for creating volume and movement in the hair, making them ideal for achieving that bouncy, salon-fresh look every day,” says Dee Michelle, a luxury hair extensions specialist and founder of Linked Hair Salon. With its purposefully uniformed layers, Michelle says that this cut is best suited for those with “thicker hair who want structure, lightness, and a touch of effortless glamour.”

3. Hair Gems

Tapping into our inner child will continue to influence our hair choices. While ribbons and bows galore have been all the rave lately, we’ll be stocking up on hair gems for fall.

“Bling is back, [and] this Y2K-inspired trend is giving us major girl group vibes,” says Yaz Roque, a celebrity makeup artist and hairstylist. “Rhinestones are versatile, fun, and can make the simplest style look special.”

Roque suggests keeping hairstyle simple—preferably bobs, buns, braids, and ponytails. “Alternate gems of all shapes and sizes focusing on your hair’s natural part, the crown, or the ends of your braids or curls for maximum impact,” Roque says. “For an extra trendy vibe, pair gem sizes with your outfit—micro-gems for minimalist looks and oversized rhinestones for drama.” For extra security, you can swap out the bling stampers for bedazzled bobby pins or flat rhinestone clips to best avoid damaging your stands. A pro tip? Use eyelash glue and hairspray to seal.

4. Jawline Bob

We’re committing to shorter, more drastic chops, starting with the jawline bob, a hairstyle known for its super sharp, sculpted edges. “[The jawline bob] effortlessly highlights facial features while offering a fresh, modern twist,” says Jennifer Korab, a celebrity hairstylist and owner of Renaissance Salon+Spa. Equal parts edgy and elegant, what makes this chin-grazing style so coveted in the new year—as embraced by celebrities including Hailey Bieber, Taylor Russell, and LE SSERAFIM’s Chaewon—is ultimately its versatility. It suits various hair textures, adds Korab, and combined with the growing focus on face-framing styles and clean, minimalist aesthetics, [this look] makes it a universally appealing choice.

5. Cropped Curls

2025 is all about embracing the natural look. With that, we’ll be seeing an uptick in natural, more defined textures, including cropped curls. “Cropped curls are a great way to refresh your curly girl aesthetic,” says Sarah Potempa, a celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of The Beachwaver Co. Potempa predicts a rise in shorter-cut curls that will “enhance your natural texture and help define the shape of the curls.”

To achieve the look, Potempa recommends bringing inspo pictures to the salon, so your stylist knows the expectations. “You should also do your research as cutting curls is different from cutting fine and straighter hair,” she adds. Once the chop is complete, Potempa suggests opting for a mousse and styling gel to “not only define the curls, but to add shine and hold.”

6. Birkin Bangs

Birkin bangs are not going anywhere this fall. Nodding to the ‘70s—and inspired by the late style icon Jane Birkin and modern interpretations seen on Gigi Hadid, Taylor Swift, and Jenna Ortega—Michelle says that these fuller, curtain-style bangs help “frame the face beautifully [and] evoke a retro vibe.” They can be worn at versatile lengths that also suit just about every face shape, and pair seamlessly with both long and short hairstyles.

7. Long Layers

Long layers will serve as the ultimate low-maintenance style for fall. Boasting its seemingly untouched, lived-in look, long layers “create a soft, cascading effect that enhances natural texture and length while adding dimension,” says Michelle. This trend, showcased by stars like Beyoncé and Sabrina Carpenter, among many others, is all about “understated elegance with maximum impact,” adds Michelle. While this look can be achieved through a fresh trim at the salon, extensions are also another way to embody soft layers without the commitment.

8. Sleek Blowouts

Marc Piasecki

The sleek, bouncy blowout is a style that started trending in late 2024. So far, it’s been a go-to style for 2025, and we don’t see any signs of its momentum slowing down as we head into a new season. A clean salon-looking blowout has always been on the trend radar but has become increasingly more popular by Sabrina Carpenter,” says Potempa.

Luckily, you can achieve salon-esque waves from the comfort of your home with a curling iron, thermal round brush, or even, heatless curling sets. A little spritz of anti-humidity treatment and hairspray will extend the life of your blowout.

9. Mocha Mousse Hair

Fall will ring in more subdued hues that are warm yet easy to manage. In particular, we’re eyeing deep, rich tones like mocha mousse, a rising colorway inspired by Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year. Victoria Lynch, founder and CEO of Remi Cachet, predicts that consumers will embrace nourishing routines, heatless tools, and earthier tones to create stunning, natural looks without compromising hair health or budget. “With fewer touch-ups required, warm tones offer a long-lasting, low-maintenance option for those looking for effortless beauty.”

10. Fiery Hues

Vibrant dyes aren’t completely out this fall. Pops of color will come in the form of fiery hues—think cherry cola, ginger hues, and even a more subtle strawberry blonde to brighten up the wave of neutrals. “We’ve seen [stars like Dua Lipa push the boundaries with striking shades, using multi-tones to elevate her bold and edgy aesthetic,” says Lynch. She adds that the use of multi-toned extensions will be on the rise as they “offer a creative way to add dimension and color without the damage, and can even incorporate fiery hues like copper or auburn for a bold, warm look.”

11. 2010s-Inspired Side Bangs

The early 2010s resurgence is upon us this year. So far, the time capsule has reintroduced side-swept bangs. In the past year, the polarizing look has been captured on stars like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian, and Gigi Hadid, pairing it with a deep side part to match—and we predict that it’ll gain traction as we head into fall. “This look embodies soft sophistication and adaptability,” says Korab. “With the ongoing revival of Y2K-inspired trends, it’s an ideal choice for those craving [a hairstyle] that is polished yet playful.”

12. Money Pieces

Want to experiment with color without the commitment? The money piece look is a bold hair technique that will do just that—it’s dyeing the front section of your hair and leaving the rest of your head untouched. While the money piece was a dominating hair trend in the early 2020s, it’s making its return thanks to stars like KATSEYE’s Megan, who recently opted for baby pink, face-framing bangs.

Lordet predicts that fall will see warmer, caramel-toned money pieces. “It’s also a great ‘entry-level’ color update if you’re not ready for a full balayage or highlight,” he says. For this look, maintenance is relatively easy, adds Lordet, who explains that you can stretch your appointments to every 8 to 10 weeks, and use a color-safe shampoo. “Hailey Bieber’s done it with soft brunettes, and Beyoncé’s rocked it with more dramatic contrast. It’s a trend that flatters everyone.”

13. Boho Braids

Protective styles are year-round, but boho braids may be seeing an uptick this fall, courtesy of KATSEYE’s Manon, Zoë Kravitz, and Marsai Martin, who are constantly providing hair inspo to rock braids with ease. This stunning look consists of box braids accented with pieces of wavy and curly hair left out, striking the perfect balance between effortless and elevated as we head into cozier months. “[Boho braids] very much give off ‘I didn’t try too hard but I look good’ energy,” says Alvin Mills, founder of UK-based haircare brand SHYNE.

You can achieve boho braids by visiting your nearest braiding salon. In case you’re looking to DIY it at home, Mills recommends prepping your hair with a moisturizing leave-in or curl cream to soften the hair strands before braiding to cut down on frizz and gives your braids a more defined finish. Once your braids are in, tie them down at night with a silky durag or a satin bonnet for extra layer of protection. “Think of it like two-factor authentication for your braids—it really helps them last,” says Mills.

As for maintenance, keep your scalp hydrated by applying a lightweight oil a few times a week, and touch up your edges with a bit of gel or edge control when needed. “To keep the style looking fresh, I always recommend using a curl cream to define and hydrate any leave-out or loose curls,” he adds. “You can also mix it with water in a spray bottle for a quick refresh midweek.”

14. Hair Tinsel

Just because it’s fall, doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with vibrant hairstyles. If not anything, this season is the perfect time to introduce pops of color in unconventional ways. We’re looking to incorporate hints of sparkle by way of hair tinsel, a Y2K-inspired hairstyle that “adds a playful, festive flair without long-term commitment,” says Lordet. The key to rocking hair tinsel for fall is to go chic rather than costume-y—think a sleek ponytail or soft waves. But if you don’t want to draw too much attention, Lordet recommends “weaving strands of tinsel underneath layers so it catches the light when you move—not too much, just enough to turn heads.”
