Clueless Is Back: Alicia Silverstone Will Reprise Her Iconic Role in a Sequel TV Series
Hollywood is still deep in the throes of ’90s nostalgia, as evidenced by the current slew of turn-of-the-millennium projects studios are eager to remix or reboot into prequels, sequels, and spin-offs. The latest to join their ranks is the 1995 fan-favorite film Clueless, now set for a sequel TV series on Peacock, which will star Alicia Silverstone reprising her original, iconic role as Cher Horowitz.
The movie, itself a reinterpretation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, previously begat a spin-off TV series in the late ’90s, also known as Clueless, and it remains unclear whether this modern-day sequel series will bear the same name. For Peacock, CBS Studios and Universal Television will develop Cher’s latest saga, which will be written and executive produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Gossip Girl fame, as well as Dollface creator (and Freakier Friday writer) Jordan Weiss. Joining them will be the 1995 film’s writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence as additional executive producers.
This isn’t Peacock’s first attempt at revisiting Clueless. Per Deadline, a reboot series focusing on Stacey Dash’s Dionne Davenport, Cher’s best friend, originally went into development before eventually failing to solidify.
There’s no news yet as to who else will star in the new Clueless series, nor what its plot will explore. In 2023, Silverstone told The Hollywood Reporter that “when Clueless came out, [my life] really shifted. I had been the girl from Crush, then I was the Aerosmith chick, and then, after that, I was Cher.” And as the Peacock announcement suggests, she never really stopped being Cher.
