Port Burwell beach closed as police search for missing swimmer

Provincial police in Elgin County say Port Burwell beach is closed as they continue to search for a swimmer that went missing over the weekend.

On Sunday, emergency crews were dispatched at 3:05 p.m. to the beach in the Municipality of Bayham, southeast of London. They saw two individuals had found themselves in distress while swimming in Lake Eerie, police said.

One swimmer was pulled to safety and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The second individual did not resurface.

Police are working with members of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton to find the missing swimmer.

The investigation is ongoing.
