Ronaldo Revolts Over Diogo Jota's Death: I Can't Understand It

Portugal national football team player Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted to the death of his teammate Diogo Jota in a traffic accident this morning, saying: "I can't understand it."
Liverpool star player Diogo Jota, 28, lost his life in a car accident with his brother André in Zamora, Spain this morning. Jota had just gotten married two weeks ago.
Ronaldo and Jota played together just a month ago in Portugal's 5-3 penalty shootout win over Spain in the UEFA Clubs League, with Jota coming on as a substitute in the 105th minute.
The Spanish forward last played in the Nations League final in Munich, Germany, on June 8. At the end of the month, he married his childhood sweetheart, whom he had been with for 10 years. The couple had three children.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who wrote "I can't understand it" from his X account, said , "We were just together in the national team, he just got married" and added:
"My condolences to your family, wife and children, and I wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be by their side. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you very much."
Diego Jota transferred to Liverpool for £41 million in 2020.
The star player played 182 matches in the Premier League, scored 65 goals and made 26 assists. During this time, he won three trophies with Liverpool:
- Premier League title (2024-25)
- FA Cup title (2021-22)
- League Cup (EFL Cup) title (2021-22)
Liverpool, the club for which Jota played, made the following statement regarding his death:
"We are devastated by the tragic death of Diogo Jota. Liverpool will not be making any further statement at this time. We ask that Diogo and Andre's family, friends, team-mates and club staff remain private as they struggle to come to terms with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to support them."
In Liverpool, England, citizens laid flowers in memory of Jota at Liverpool's Anfield Stadium.
