Liverpool to retire Jota's number 20 jersey

English Premier League team Liverpool announced that it will retire the number 20 jersey of 28-year-old Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, who lost his life in a traffic accident.
Liverpool star player Diogo Jota lost his life in a car accident with his brother André in Zamora, Spain this morning. Jota had just gotten married two weeks ago.
According to Marca, Jota died when the car he was travelling in with his 26-year-old professional footballer brother André went off the road and caught fire.
The Portuguese forward last played in the Nations League final in Munich, Germany, on June 8. At the end of the month, he married his childhood sweetheart, with whom he had been together for 10 years. The couple had three children.
In a statement on Liverpool's website, it was announced that Jota's number 20 jersey would be "fittingly immortalised" following his death.
The statement comes after fans called for the number 20 to be retired:
“The number 20 shirt will be immortalised for his contribution to Liverpool’s 20th title in the club’s history in the 2024-25 season. Jota’s winning goal in front of the Kop stands in the Merseyside derby (against Everton) in April, with his trademark dribbling and shot, will be remembered as a meaningful farewell and final goal.”
