International Bornova History and Culture Symposium

The “International Bornova History and Culture Symposium”, organized by Bornova Municipality and for which preparations have been completed, will take place at the Yeşilova Mound Visitor Center on May 22-23, 2025. Drawing attention with its scientific depth and cultural richness, the Symposium will address Bornova’s 8,500-year history and cultural heritage with an interdisciplinary approach.
IMPORTANT NAMES WILL BE INCLUDEDThe symposium will begin on Thursday, May 22 at 09:00 with the opening session titled “Local Governments and Cultural Heritage Management.” Speakers of the session will include former Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu and Izmir Institute of Technology Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Koray Velibeyoğlu. Secretary General of the Historical Cities Union and Deputy Secretary General of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Mahir Polat was also among the speakers of the event.
BORNOVA'S HISTORY WILL BE PUT ON THE TABLEThe second day of the symposium will begin with a session titled “Bornova in the Prehistoric Age (Yeşilova-Yassıtepe Special Session)”. In this special session, former CHP Secretary General and former Bornova Municipality Mayor Prof. Dr. Kamil Okyay Sındır will speak as session chairman.
During the two-day symposium, 23 academics and experts from national and international levels will present papers. The session titles were determined to reflect Bornova's different historical periods and cultural layers: Urban Identity and Social Memory
• Bornova in the Prehistoric Age (Yeşilova-Yassıtepe Special Session) • Bornova in the Ancient Period • A Poet from Bornova: Homer • Bornova in the Ottoman and Republican Periods • Social Harmony and Cultural Diversity
