The Libyan National Unity Government (NUG) has described Greece’s bid to explore for hydrocarbons in the disputed areas south of the island of Crete as a “violation of Libya’s sovereign rights.”
In a written statement made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UBH, it was stated that it was deeply concerned about the announcement made by Greece in the Official Journal of the European Union on June 12 regarding the call for tenders for hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation in the disputed areas with Libya in the south of the island of Crete.
The statement, which emphasized the importance of respect for international law, said: "The Ministry confirms that these steps are a clear violation of Libya's sovereign rights and expresses its full reservations and clear objection to any exploration or drilling activity in these areas without a prior legal framework that respects the rules of international law."
It was noted that Greek authorities are expected to evaluate Libya's reservations and objections with a sense of responsibility, taking into account the depth of historical relations between the two countries.
The statement also requested Greece to "embrace constructive dialogue and negotiations based on the rules of international law and considering the interests of all parties in order to reach fair and equitable solutions."
