8 arrests in Edirne over village land sold 10 years ago

In 2015, 14,800 square meters of land belonging to the 'village legal entity' in İskender village, a district of Edirne, was allegedly sold to 5 contractors for 1 million 560 thousand liras. 10 years have passed since the sale, but the villager filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office, claiming that there were irregularities in this sale.

JASAT DETAINED 10 SUSPECTS, INCLUDING THE FORMER HEADMAN

Following the villager’s complaint, the Edirne Provincial Gendarmerie Command’s JASAT detectives took action as part of the investigation launched by the Edirne Public Prosecutor’s Office. In a simultaneous operation conducted on Friday morning, the teams detained 10 suspects, including 4 members including the former village headman, 5 businessmen and the contractor who purchased the land. The detained suspects were transferred to the Edirne Courthouse under heavy security measures this morning after being processed by the gendarmerie for 2 days. While 2 of the suspects were released after giving their statements at the prosecutor’s office, the other 8 suspects were allegedly referred to the on-call court with a request for arrest on charges of “rigging tenders of public institutions and organizations, abuse of office.” The 8 suspects who appeared before the judge here were arrested and sent to prison.
