The most important criteria in rhinoplasty: harmony with the face and naturalness

Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist Dr. Mutluhan Temizsoy said that rhinoplasty, also known as nose aesthetics, is a surgery that can simultaneously correct deformities in the nasal structure and breathing problems.
Dr. Temizsoy, noting that solutions to both aesthetic and functional problems can be found simultaneously, said, "Some patients seek this procedure because they are dissatisfied with the shape of their nose, while others seek it because of breathing problems such as a deviation. In some cases, we evaluate both aesthetic and functional needs together, addressing both issues in a single surgery."
Dr. Temizsoy listed the situations requiring this surgery as "reducing or enlarging the size of the nose, correcting the hump on the bridge of the nose, lifting, thinning or shaping the tip of the nose, changing the size or shape of the nostrils, correcting congenital deformities, addressing breathing problems such as nasal deviation, and correcting post-traumatic disorders."
"Personalized planning is done before the surgery"
Dr. Temizsoy explained that prior to rhinoplasty, the patient's current nose condition and expectations are thoroughly analyzed. He explained that this process utilizes examination, imaging methods, and, in some cases, three-dimensional simulations. Emphasizing the importance of a natural, facially consistent post-operative appearance, Dr. Temizsoy said, "Every nose is unique, and every patient has different expectations. Therefore, we conduct a personalized preoperative plan using photo analysis, CT scans, and, if necessary, 3D simulations. This allows us to achieve more natural, facially harmonious results."
"Open surgery for extensive changes"
Dr. Temizsoy explained that surgeries are usually performed under general anesthesia, explaining that in open surgery, incisions are made between the nostrils, while in closed surgery, all procedures are performed inside the nose. Dr. Temizsoy explained that the techniques used vary depending on the patient, explaining, "The open technique is preferred when more extensive structural changes are required. Closed rhinoplasty is suitable for patients who prefer not to leave scars and require more limited intervention."
"Patience and care are important in the recovery process"
Dr. Temizsoy explained that mild pain, swelling, bruising, and nasal congestion are expected in the first days after surgery, and explained that a splint is placed on the nose, and patients are usually discharged the same day. He emphasized that it takes months for the nose to fully shape and take its final shape, and that meticulous patient care and follow-up appointments are essential during this period. He emphasized that the healing process requires patience, saying, "While swelling subsides within a few weeks, it usually takes 6 to 12 months for the nose to reach its final shape. During this period, regular check-ups with the doctor should be maintained, and impact, excessive sunlight, and strenuous exercise should be avoided, especially in the first weeks."
"Some complications may occur"
Dr. Temizsoy reminded that, like any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty can be associated with complications, stating that, while rare, infections, bleeding, nasal asymmetry, or reactions to anesthesia can occur, and in some cases, a second corrective surgery may be necessary. He emphasized that these risks can generally be mitigated by selecting a qualified surgeon and selecting the appropriate patient.
"Realistic expectations increase satisfaction rates"
Dr. Temizsoy stated that rhinoplasty improves the harmony of the nose with the face and positively affects a person's self-confidence, adding:
Every patient needs to realistically understand the limitations of their post-operative appearance. Successful results are as closely tied to expectation management as they are to the surgical intervention itself. Facial harmony and a natural appearance should be prioritized after rhinoplasty. Expecting a completely different face after surgery is unrealistic. Interventions undertaken with realistic expectations yield satisfactory results.
