The book also covers the July 15, 2016 coup attempt extensively. Stoltenberg noted that he saw the Turkish Grand National Assembly bombed during his visit to Ankara, saying, "This sight was as shocking as the destruction of the Norwegian Parliament."
Stoltenberg, who reported that Erdoğan told him, “Only Theresa May, Carl Bildt and you stood behind us,” wrote that the Turkish people found the West’s response “weak and late.”
At the end of the book, Stoltenberg described Türkiye as “a difficult ally but an indispensable partner”:
“Working with Erdoğan was not always easy, but a NATO without Turkey would be an incomplete NATO.”
