The forest fire in the Ödemiş district of İzmir started at around 21:00 on Wednesday evening.

The flames rising from the forest area advanced towards residential areas under the influence of the wind.

Teams found the lifeless body of a person in the area.

It was understood that 81-year-old İbrahim Erkan was bedridden and his wife left the house to seek help during the fire.

While the firefighting efforts were continuing, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı announced another sad news.

Forest worker İbrahim Demir was 39 years old. He was married and had two children.

He had gone from Konya to Ödemiş to intervene in the forest fire.

He became a martyr after his vehicle broke down and he was caught in the flames.

FOUR NEIGHBORHOODS WERE EVACUATED

In the fire that broke out in the Monastir area of ​​Tosunlar Neighborhood, it was decided to evacuate the residents of Yeniköy Neighborhood who were threatened by the flames.

Demirciyaniği, Ortaköy and Karadoğan neighborhoods were previously evacuated due to the fire, which continued to spread due to strong winds.

Thus, the number of neighborhoods evacuated as a precautionary measure in the region has reached four.

The fire, which broke out around 16:00 yesterday near Zafer Neighborhood in Buca district of Izmir and spread to Kısık Neighborhood in Gaziemir district, continues to be extinguished by ground intervention throughout the night.

It was reported that the fire, which has been going on for about 17 hours, has been burning for about 17 hours and the flames are approaching residential areas, while smoke has filled the sky in the region.

Firefighters who fought against the flames during the extinguishing efforts, along with teams from the Izmir Regional Forestry Directorate and the 112 Emergency Call Center, rested on the roadsides and in their vehicles.

The airborne intervention, which was suspended when the weather darkened, resumed in the early hours of the morning.

HAS ÇEŞME HIGHWAY BEEN OPENED TO TRAFFIC?

Due to fires in Izmir, the Izmir-Aydin Highway is closed to traffic from time to time.

According to the road status bulletin of the General Directorate of Highways and the post on its social media account, the Izmir-Aydın Highway, which was temporarily closed to traffic due to the fire that broke out between the Çeşme Highway junction and the airport junctions (Yıldızköy location), has been reopened to traffic.
