Decision to 'refer to hospital and continue detention' regarding Ayşe Barım

Ersin Eroglu

The 26th High Criminal Court, which evaluated the objection to the detention of ID Communications owner Ayşe Barım, wrote to the Marmara Closed Penal Institution in its evaluation today and requested a report on whether Barım can remain in prison.

The court used the following expressions in its decision:

“It is requested that he be transferred to the nearest fully equipped state hospital and a report be obtained from a committee including cardiologists and neurologists to determine whether there is any harm in his staying in prison due to his health condition and that it be sent to our court before July 7, 2025.”

On the other hand, the court, which also evaluated Barım's objection to detention, decided to continue the detention and postponed the re-examination of the file to July 7, 2025, when the first hearing will be held.

WHAT HAPPENED?

An indictment was prepared for manager Ayşe Barım, who was arrested on charges of being one of the planners of the Gezi Park protests, demanding a prison sentence of 22 years and 6 months to 30 years. The Istanbul 26th High Criminal Court accepted the indictment on May 5.

Barım, who was accused of directing artists to the Gezi Park protests, was detained on January 24 and sent to Marmara Prison, formerly known as Silivri Prison, after being arrested on January 27.

Barım is accused of "aiding the attempt to overthrow the Government of the Republic of Turkey." The famous actors' manager denies the allegations. The indictment included recordings of Barım's phone conversations with theater, cinema and TV series actors, as well as with people arrested in the Gezi Trial.

It was alleged that Barım "enabled the shooting of films, documentaries and videos to be shot in order to create both social and global perception" regarding the Gezi Park protests. It was alleged that Barım shared hashtags created regarding the Gezi Park protests on social media with artists affiliated with him for this purpose. In February, following an objection to Barım's detention, the court ruled for his release.

However, before his release was carried out, the prosecutor's office appealed to a higher court, whereupon Barım's detention continued.
