Russian cyclist Gulnaz Khatuntseva from Bashkiria, who is a bronze medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and European champion, spoke about the hard life in the village, Sport Express reports.
The famous athlete shared that she understands those people who leave the Russian hinterland. She linked this to small salaries and hard physical labor.
"The salaries are tiny, and they work from morning till night, and their work - God bless them. My brother stayed in the fields, born in 1998, works on a collective farm. He leaves early in the morning, comes back late in the evening - and does not see life," noted Khatuntseva.
She also recalled the words of her father, which he said shortly before his death. Gulnaz was then a little over ten years old. But, according to her, those phrases of her father were imprinted in her heart for life.
The athlete said that once her parents had a fight. All the household members rushed to pity their mother, and she ran to her father. He cried. And then she said: "Help your sisters and brothers." And when the head of the family passed away, the girl tried her best to help her loved ones. At the same time, she never asked her mother for money for her needs, although she really wanted a new toy or sweets.
She shared how as children they carried water bottles and chopped firewood, since there was no gas heating. And as soon as Gulnaz started receiving a salary, she immediately installed gas in her home.
"When my dad left, I felt that the responsibility was now on me. So my aspirations were through the roof. If you have a goal, nothing will stop you," the athlete added.
