The Forestry Research Institute has developed an innovative system for combating Sosnowsky's hogweed based on selective herbicides.
Scientists have identified more than ten effective combinations of chemicals adapted for various ecosystems - forests, agricultural lands and populated areas, reports the St. Petersburg TV channel.
The key advantage of the technology is its selective effect on hogweed alone, without harming other plants, including lawn grasses and coniferous plantings. As explained by the head of the research department of the institute, Alexander Egorov, the development takes into account strict environmental restrictions, including a ban on the use of herbicides in water protection zones.
Field tests conducted since early May 2025 have confirmed the high efficiency of the method — the treatment period completely destroyed the populations of the poisonous plant. The Institute is ready to transfer the technology to industrial and agricultural companies for mass application. This development may become a solution to the problem of the spread of hogweed, which poses a serious threat to biodiversity and human health.
