The Trump administration has sent Iran a "detailed and acceptable" nuclear proposal and called on Tehran to accept it, White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt said.
Special Envoy Steven Witkoff conveyed the proposal to Iranian officials and that accepting it would be in Tehran's interests, she said. Levitt added that the administration would not comment on the details of the document.
Earlier on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Oman had conveyed details of the US proposal to Tehran, which the Iranian minister said would respond based on national interests.
The day before, according to Bloomberg, Donald Trump said that a new nuclear deal should allow the US to destroy any nuclear facilities in Iran. He also expressed the opinion that an agreement could be reached within the "next two weeks."
The Oman-brokered US-Iran talks included five rounds, the last of which took place in Rome on May 23. Following the talks, Araghchi mentioned Oman's proposed mechanisms to overcome the impasse, suggesting that progress could be made in one or two rounds.
However, before this round, disagreements emerged: the US demanded that Iran completely abandon uranium enrichment, which Tehran rejected, pointing out the impossibility of reaching agreements under such a condition. At the same time, Iran allowed for a reduction in the enrichment level and was ready to strengthen control over its nuclear program to demonstrate its peaceful nature.
In 2015, Iran and the P5+1 (the UK, Germany, China, Russia, the US, and France) signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which lifted sanctions in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program. The US withdrew from the deal in May 2018 under Trump, reinstating sanctions. In response, Iran began gradually reducing its commitments under the agreement, including lifting restrictions on nuclear research.
