US Vice President J.D. Vance has found himself at the center of a controversy after mistakenly calling California Democratic Senator Alex Padilla "Jose" during a public speech.
"I was hoping that Jose Padilla would be here to ask a question, but unfortunately I think he decided not to show up because there is no way to put on a show," Vance said during a visit to California.
The statement drew a sharp response from local politicians. Governor Gavin Newsom suggested on social media X that the mistake was intentional, given Vance and Padilla's work together in the Senate. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the vice president's behavior unacceptable and disrespectful.
Earlier, it was reported that the head of US intelligence accused the media of distorting her position on Iran's nuclear program.
