US President Donald Trump has accused his predecessor Barack Obama and former US State Department chief Hillary Clinton of deliberately discrediting his 2016 election victory by accusing "Russian hackers" of involvement. He elaborated on his position in an interview with Newsmax.
"And they knew it was fake. They knew the Russia thing was fake... I think they should pay for it," Donald Trump said during a conversation with a Newsmax correspondent.
The president added that previously classified documents released by Pam Bondi, the country's attorney general, prove that the so-called "Russian trace" never existed.
The same statement was recently made by the US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. The head of the US intelligence services described Barack Obama's actions in 2016 as an attempt to commit a "coup d'etat".
