The UK government is considering buying US fighter jets capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons in what the Times reports would be the country's biggest defence project since the Cold War.

The main candidate for purchase is said to be the stealthy F-35A Lightning fighters produced by Lockheed Martin, capable of carrying low-yield free-fall bombs.

Defence Secretary John Healey and Chief of the Defence Staff Admiral Tony Radakin have already held preliminary talks with the Pentagon on the issue, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has backed the initiative.

Let us recall that the British government announced plans to significantly strengthen the country's defense potential .

Earlier it was reported that the UK was preparing to publish a strategic defence review in which Russia would be identified as an "immediate and pressing" threat to national security .
