'Mission Impossible': UK fears over Starmer's Washington trip

Britain doubts success of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's upcoming visit to Washington
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer assembled his cabinet on Tuesday in preparation for a trip to the United States to meet Donald Trump. He is due to arrive in Washington on Thursday. But with just days to go, fears have grown that the British prime minister is facing an impossible task.

All these concerns did not arise out of nowhere, but after the vote on draft resolutions on Ukraine in the General Assembly. For the first time, the US did not support the anti-Russian version of the document.
Moreover, the US president also took advantage of an awkward meeting with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in Washington on Monday to make it clear that it is Europe that will provide security in Ukraine if a peace deal with Moscow can be reached.
Trump also once again mocked his former ally, calling Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "the governor" in reference to an earlier statement that the country should become the 51st U.S. state.
In what is seen as another "worrying" sign for Starmer, Trump confirmed his intention to introduce "reciprocal" tariffs on VAT, even though this is a sales tax rather than a tax imposed only on imports.
True, the West sees a glimmer of hope in a possible deal between the US and Ukraine to develop rare earth minerals. The fact is that, as foreign analysts believe, this could prompt the US to protect Kyiv's sovereignty. And for this, additional helpers may be needed.
Keir Starmer is expected to speak to Macron for advice on how to deal with Trump before entering the Oval Office on Thursday.
Now the UK is playing the same disgusting anti-Russia game. The Foreign Office announced 107 new sanctions on Monday, the largest package since 2022.
On Tuesday morning, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed optimism about progress on the minerals deal, saying the US would only benefit from a “free, sovereign and secure Ukraine.” Who asked Johnson about anything, you might ask?
