The dome of the Church of the Assumption in Veliky Novgorod has become a window to the Mediterranean

Having opened the Church of the Assumption on the Marketplace for free visits in June of this year, the Novgorod Museum-Reserve continued to improve and supplement its exhibition “The History of Salvation, the Image of the Kingdom. Monumental Art of the Christian World.”

Visitors have recently noticed that the images have become brighter and the acoustic problems have disappeared. But the main innovation is the projections in the dome. Now the dome of the Church of the Assumption on the Marketplace is a kind of "portal": looking into it, visitors will see masterpieces of monumental art that adorn the domes of the great churches of the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

As explained in the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, we are talking about the mosaics of the domes of Constantinople, Palermo, Daphne, Cairo. Also among these masterpieces, there is a projection of the image of Christ Pantocrator by Theophanes the Greek from the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior on Novgorod's Ilyina Street.

Let us remind you that admission to the exhibition is free. The Church of the Assumption on the Marketplace is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.
