The Ukrainian conflict could have ended this year, but Europe is doing everything it can to prevent it, says Alexey Chepa, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs . He told Lenta.ru about this.
"Of course, I planned that it would be resolved by the end of the year. I planned that, in principle, certain agreements on memoranda would be worked out already in May, but, unfortunately, you see how it turned out," Chepa said, answering a question about the likelihood of the conflict ending by the end of the year.
He noted that there are forces that are trying to do everything to ensure that there is no agreement between Russia and Ukraine .
“I am now referring primarily to European countries, which are sabotaging all actions on these works in every possible way,” the deputy added.
The parties presented each other with their versions of a memorandum on a peaceful settlement at the talks in Istanbul , which took place on June 2.
On June 23, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported that the date of a new round of talks with Ukraine could be determined this week. On June 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Moscow's initiative for a new round of talks "a potential attempt to delay economic sanctions."
On June 24, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul were not serious and that NATO was betting on continuing military aid to Kiev . According to him, NATO intends to provide Ukraine with the strongest possible position when serious talks begin.
