Infarmed orders withdrawal of batches of Bisoprolol

Infarmed has suspended the sale of seven batches of Bisoprolol, indicated for the treatment of heart disease, due to the detection of an impurity with values above the acceptable level.

The decision by the National Authority for Medicines and Health Products (Infarmed) comes after the company Towa Pharmaceutical announced that it would voluntarily recall seven batches of the medicines Bisoprolol toLife, 2.5mg tablet and Bisoprolol toLife, 10mg tablet, “due to an analytical result above the acceptable limits for an impurity having been detected”.

Bisoprolol belongs to a group of medicines called beta blockers that work by affecting the body's response to certain nerve impulses, mainly in the heart . As a result, bisoprolol slows the heart rate and makes the heart more efficient at pumping blood around the body, according to the medicine's information leaflet.

The drug authority appeals to entities that have these batches of medicine in stock not to sell, dispense or administer them, and must return them.

Infarmed also asks patients who are using medicines belonging to this batch not to interrupt treatment and to contact their doctor “as soon as possible” to replace it with another batch or alternative medicine.
