Corinthians: Augusto Melo's statement after being denounced in the 'VaideBet case'

The atmosphere at Corinthians has once again become turbulent following new developments involving suspended president Augusto Melo and striker Memphis Depay. The latest episodes have heightened tensions between fans, management, and the squad, directly impacting the club's routine both on and off the field.
On Tuesday (July 22), the court accepted the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office's complaint against Augusto Melo, making him a defendant in the so-called "VaideBet case." The decision was signed by Judge Márcia Mayumi Okoda of the 2nd Tax Crimes Court. In addition to the suspended president, other former club officials and businesspeople were also charged. According to the prosecutor's office, the group allegedly arranged to use a shell company to simulate intermediation in the contract with the sponsor, embezzling part of the R$360 million from the agreement, with R$1.4 million already withdrawn from the club's coffers.

The charges against Melo include criminal association, theft, and money laundering. The Public Prosecutor's Office also requested the freezing of the assets of those involved and the payment of R$40 million in compensation to Corinthians.
After receiving the complaint, Augusto Melo released an official statement. In the statement, he claimed to be a victim of persecution and legal irregularities:
"Corinthians president Augusto Melo claims that all the accusations against him are false. He is the victim of an illegal process full of nullities and abuses [...] President Augusto Melo owes nothing and fears nothing, which is why he has already requested the end of the secrecy that prevents Corinthians fans from accessing the full documents of the case."
The next morning, graffiti covered the walls of Parque São Jorge. The messages expressed outrage against the ousted president and Memphis Depay. One of the targets of the protests was the Arena Tatuapé Sports Complex, a development linked to Augusto Melo. The sign read: "Augusto, a thief. Assets acquired with Corinthians money."
The Dutch striker's presence has also been a source of controversy. From the release of the song "São Paulo Freestyle," in which he criticizes former player Neto, to recent actions, such as leaving the Morumbis stadium during halftime of the loss to São Paulo, Memphis has been increasingly at odds with some of the fans and the board. The club's debt to the player, who has already received R$1.4 million in image rights, also includes unpaid bonuses related to the Paulistão title, estimated at R$4.7 million.
Amid protests and accusations, Corinthians faces a critical period in its internal politics. The situation highlights administrative instability and growing discontent among fans.
