| First, there were just a few lines, but they clearly showed who was involved. Then, the face was completely drawn and the rest was sketched. Next, the face, uniform, tie, cap — and medals. The caricature of Gouveia e Melo was made for the Observador’s anniversary magazine, which hit the newsstands this week, precisely at the time when the admiral formally presented his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic. On the final cover, the medals were not visible to make room for everything else, namely the title, which is a question: “Military men in politics again?” The caricature is by illustrator Henrique Monteiro, who has been working for years on the Observador’s anniversary magazines. He started doing cartoons in 1993, for Expresso, and then worked for Diário de Notícias, i and Sapo, where he is now. The art direction is by Luís Alexandre. |

On the cover, there are three possible answers to the question in the title: “Yes”, “No” or “Good question: I need to read more about it”. We hope you chose the latter option because, to “read more about it”, we have an unpublished essay by Jaime Nogueira Pinto on the role of different military Presidents in the History of Portugal. We have had military Presidents in dictatorships, coups d’état, revolutions and democracies — and Jaime Nogueira Pinto explains what each of them did. |
This magazine was coordinated by João Pombeiro, who was a journalist for the magazine Grande Reportagem, editor of Notícias Sábado (a magazine for DN and JN), contributor to Sábado, executive editor and director of the magazine LER. Since 2016, he has developed and coordinated several editorial projects for different media groups — and now he has had to make some difficult choices. A printed magazine has a limitation that Observador does not face in digital: space. As more advertising pages arrived, it was necessary to shorten texts and, unfortunately, remove topics that were part of the original plan. In any case, there is a lot to read. There is a long and fascinating conversation between Maria João Avillez and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa about the 25th of April. There is a text about the legacy of Pope Francis and another about the various Cristiano Ronaldos who play in Portugal. There are international reports with Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique; with Gino, the mini-Trump, in the USA; and with Pérola and her two granddaughters, in Israel, who tell how they escaped Hamas in the attacks of October 7. And there are, of course, the opinions of José Manuel Fernandes, Rui Ramos, Helena Matos, Alberto Gonçalves and several others. |
| | | Interview | | In an interview, José Miguel Júdice says that Pedro Nuno made the same mistake as Constâncio and may have changed the course of history. He also talks about his disappointment with Marcelo and asks Montenegro to be bold. | |
| | Presidential Elections 2026 | | The former communications wizard of Socrates prepared everything down to the last detail for Gouveia e Melo's presentation. Notables from various parties were present. "He looks like Obama", people commented to the audience. | |
| | Domestic Violence | | The Attorney General's Office says that the investigation cannot depend on the victim, but the Vizela case was closed as soon as the victim withdrew. Criticism could precipitate legislative changes in the fight against domestic violence. | |
|
| | Companies | | After criticism of Portugal on the X network, Matthew Prince threatens to remove European headquarters from the country. In an interview with Observador, in which he denies incidents in Tires, the CEO of Cloudflare explains his "anger" with the government. | |
| | Surgery | | Anesthetist Rui Guimarães performed surgeries through SIGIC in Gaia while he was president of the hospital. IGAS opened an inspection process. The preliminary understanding is that the doctor could not have done so. | |
| | Santa Maria Hospital | | The doctor is still young, but his "intelligence" has allowed him to "gain more and more power" at the Santa Maria hospital and exploit the extra surgery system to the fullest, says a hospital source. | |
|
| | Bank of Portugal | | The Bank of Portugal has been avoiding losses for two years because, in the last decade, it has accumulated a "cushion" – something that was done against the wishes of the Ministry of Finance, led at the time by Centeno. | |
| | Party Enough | | Chega surpassed PS in number of deputies and celebrated with its own event. Ventura tried to define a path: he does not want to "destroy" and asks that people not be "afraid" of him, but he will not "become bourgeois". | |
|
| | Sexual harassment | | João and Rafael have something in common besides their love of music: they both received "inappropriate" messages from their music teacher and conductor. The Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an inquiry and the investigation is ongoing. | |
| | Italy | | For years, Berlusconi led the Italian right. After the tycoon's scandals, Salvini tried to take his place. But it was Meloni who succeeded, inherited the former PM's legacy and now governs Italy. | |
| | Sweden | | The rise of the radical right has spelled the death of "Swedish exceptionalism", but not of the social democrats. Faced with a historic crisis, they are seeking to halt a decline similar to that of their European peers. | |
|
| | France | | The French Socialists have never won an election since Hollande. They are losing voters to Macron and Mélenchon, but also to the National Union. They remain divided about the future. | |
| | Greece | | The center-left party led Greece for years, but voters blamed it for the financial crisis. The loss of support for the Socialists was so severe that a new political term was coined: Pasokization. | |
|
| | Royal Houses | | 80 years ago, at the invitation of Salazar, the widow of King Carlos returned to the country to “warm her soul with memories of the past”. A journey between a historic birth and an unexpected death. | |
| | Series | | It has more than 30 puppets and the actors even filmed under furniture. It is the new project from the creators of “Pôr do Sol” (Manuel Pureza, Henrique Dias and Rui Melo) and will premiere this summer on RTP1. | |
|
| | | | It is not the analysis of any data that inspires Chega's ratings, but only the desire for Chega to be as vulnerable and fleeting as the PRD of 1985. |
| | | From the trivial to the crucial, someone has to think about the country's terrible responses: from the incapacity in basic State services to the suffocating, sterile, ancestral bureaucracy that consumes us and corrodes everything. |
| | | If no war is good, pretending that all are equal, or that none are legitimate, is the quickest path to the triumph of the unjust. |
| | | José Luís Carneiro is a bad option, because the PS seems like a herd of lost Césars, Leitões and Ascensos Simões. From what I saw in a documentary, they would be better served with a José Luís Border Collie. |
