Senate establishes Parliamentary Front in Defense of Rare Earths

Senator Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS) was elected president of the Parliamentary Front in Defense of Brazilian Rare Earths, which was established this Wednesday, the 1st. He noted that Brazil has the second largest known reserves in the world, behind only China.
When stating that rare earths are the “key to the future”, Nelsinho highlighted that they are essential for the manufacture of batteries, magnets, wind turbines and high-tech equipment.
Composed of 16 members, the new parliamentary group seeks to promote strategic debate on the sustainable exploration of rare earths in Brazil and their role in national technological and economic development.
"Our exploration is still paltry, not living up to our potential, but we want to reverse this situation. To do so, we need to take a series of measures," he said.
The senator highlighted the importance of investing in research for the country's economic competitiveness. He also said that the initiative aims to stimulate the entire production chain in the sector, from extraction to the industrialization of high-value-added products.
"We need to discuss the necessary measures to reduce international dependence on these strategic inputs, establish partnerships, diversify suppliers, and explore markets," he added.
Nelsinho reinforced that the front also intends to propose and monitor a modern and secure regulatory framework to attract large investments, in addition to contributing to the National Rare Earth Plan.
