Portuguese Parliament rejects recognition of the State of Palestine

Of the eight draft resolutions, six called for the Portuguese government to recognize the State of Palestine, with the draft presented by Chega being sent to the 2nd Committee, recommending that the government "not proceed, for now, with the non-recognition of Palestine as a sovereign State."
The same path was followed by the draft resolution of the Liberal Initiative ( IL ), which recommends to the government "a balanced and responsible strategy to promote a peaceful and sustainable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
Another draft resolution, presented by the People, Animals and Nature (PAN) party, which does not refer to the recognition of the State of Palestine and recommends that the government "activate urgent mechanisms for the urgent reception of children from the Gaza Strip in need of specialized medical care", was approved, also being sent to the 2nd Committee.
This project had no votes against, and had abstentions from the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the Social Democratic Center–Popular Party (CDS-PP) and Chega, and votes in favor from the remaining parties, including the Socialist Party (PS).
The Portuguese Communist Party ( PCP ), Left Bloc ( BE ), Livre, PAN, Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) and PS argued that recognition of the State of Palestine is a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and that this recognition must take into account the pre-1967 borders and with its capital in East Jerusalem.
In a draft resolution, Livre advocated, in addition to the "urgent recognition" of the State of Palestine, the "immediate suspension" of the Association Agreement between the EU and Israel.
In turn, the Socialist Party (PS) recommended that the government proceed with the "immediate recognition" of the State of Palestine and that it "mobilize action within the EU institutions so that they adopt a common position in the same direction", with the PAN expressing concern about Human Rights.
Chega and CDS-PP spoke out against the recognition of the Palestinian state, arguing that, first, assumptions must be respected, such as the end of Hamas, the ceasefire agreement and the release of all hostages still held by the Palestinian resistance movement.
Some PS deputies, including former Secretary-General Pedro Nuno Santos, did not abstain from voting on the draft resolutions for the recognition of the State of Palestine presented by several opposition parties, having voted in favor.
Today, after the deaths of several children in an Israeli attack on Palestinians awaiting humanitarian aid in central Gaza on Thursday, United Nations officials once again condemned attacks on civilians in the enclave .
