Moraes sends elderly women from 8 de Janeiro back to prison after failing to wear ankle bracelets more than a thousand times

Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court revoked the house arrests of coup plotters Iraci Megumi Nagoshi , 72, and Vildete Ferreira da Silva Guardia , 74, convicted of participating in the January 8, 2023, protests in Brasília. The decisions were motivated by non-compliance with electronic monitoring rules, totaling more than a thousand violations in 2025 alone.
According to data from the São Paulo State Penitentiary Administration, Iraci violated the ankle bracelet's inclusion area, let the battery discharge, and lost the GPS signal on more than 980 occasions . Vildete had similar violations recorded on at least 20 different dates , some of which were not even justified by the defense.
In his rulings, Moraes categorically stated that the defendants demonstrated " complete contempt for judicial decisions and the Supreme Court ." Both were prohibited from using social media, communicating with other convicts, and giving interviews—all of which were conditions for serving their sentences under house arrest.
Iraci's defense argued that the trips were related to physical therapy and psychological treatments and activities such as Pilates and water aerobics, but the justice emphasized that all these trips should have been previously authorized by the Supreme Federal Court, which was not the case. The elderly woman had previously been warned, in October 2024 and January 2025, but she relapsed.
In Vildete's case, house arrest had been granted based on her advanced age and claims of fragile health, but an official medical report from the Sant'Anna penitentiary indicated that there was no need for special care incompatible with the closed regime. Even so, she also violated the rules of the ankle monitor and failed to provide justification for the violations.
Both convicts received severe sentences. Iraci received a 14-year sentence plus a 100-day fine. Vildete received an 11-year and 11-month prison sentence plus an 84-day fine. The sentences stem from crimes such as coup d'état, damage to public property, and armed criminal association.
