Ana Maria Braga gives a 'curious gift' to Alckimin, and the vice president celebrates

During his appearance on the program "Mais Você," broadcast on Thursday morning (31), Vice President Geraldo Alckmin took the opportunity to comment on the new US tariff policy, especially the 50% rate announced by former President Donald Trump on Brazilian products. Invited by Ana Maria Braga, Alckmin also holds the position of Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services and sought to clarify the practical impact of the measures on trade between the two countries.
Alckmin used one of his signature visual devices: themed socks. In this case, he opted for a pair featuring designs of cups and coffee beans, a product on the list of items subject to the new tariff. Later, Ana Maria presented him with another pair, printed with Rubik's Cubes, as well as a lunchbox filled with the day's savory snack (coxinha)—a gesture the vice president humorously acknowledged. "You've already saved my lunch," he joked.
In a relaxed tone, the vice president also referenced his medical training. "My specialty is anesthesia. When I leave here, I'm going to Fiesp," he commented, drawing laughter from the presenter. Finally, Ana Maria emphasized, "To help you work magic with negotiations," as she handed over the Rubik's Cube-themed gift.
The conversation was informal but touched on relevant topics. According to Alckmin, after intense negotiations with US authorities, approximately 45% of Brazilian exports were exempt from the new rate, remaining under the previous 10% tariff, in effect since April. Another 15% relates to sectors already affected by special tariffs, such as steel, aluminum, and vehicles. Therefore, the new surcharge is expected to affect only 35.9% of Brazil's exports.
The vice president emphasized that the measure is, in his words, disproportionate, highlighting the United States' favorable trade balance. "Of the ten products they export most to us, eight have zero tariffs; they pay nothing to enter Brazil. That's why it's unfair," he said, while enjoying the coxinha snacks served on the show.
When asked about a possible direct intervention by President Lula in the negotiations, Alckmin responded that there is a willingness for dialogue, but added: "A conversation between the President of the Republic must be prepared. If it were up to President Lula, this conversation would have happened yesterday, but we are already working on several fronts."
Finally, he recalled that, as the tariffs will only come into effect on Wednesday (August 6), products already shipped will not be affected — at least in this initial phase of trade retaliation.
