UAlg increases the number of new students in Medicine to 96

The University of Algarve ( UAlg ), through the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences ( FMCB ), will begin the 2025/2026 academic year with 96 new students in the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine (MIM), as established in the program contract signed in 2021 with the government and municipalities of the Algarve, with the aim of expanding and modernizing the teaching of Medicine and Clinical and Biomedical Research in academia.
This increase represents a response to the needs for medical training in the southern region of the country, as well as the high demand seen since the first edition of the course, in 2009/10.
For the current edition, the 17th, 410 applications were accepted into the selection process.
The MIM-UAlg is a four-year course, open exclusively to people holding at least a bachelor's degree (1st cycle diploma) in one of the areas established by the application and selection regulations.
The aforementioned 1st cycle basic training allows the first two years of the master's degree to be credited, meaning that students begin their training in the 3rd year.
The reception for new students on the course includes the 11th White Coat Ceremony, which will take place on September 2nd, at 2:00 pm, in the Grand Auditorium of the Gambelas Campus.
This symbolic event is reserved for third-year medical students, marking the transition to the clinical component of their training and the beginning of direct contact with health services and users.
The White Coat Ceremony is organized by the Medical Students' Association (NEMed) of the Academic Association of the University of Algarve, in collaboration with the FMCB and the National Association of Medical Students ( ANEM ).
In order to strengthen the career teaching staff, throughout 2025, competitions will be opened for the categories of Assistant Professor (seven vacancies), Associate Professor (four vacancies) and Full Professor (one vacancy).
In March 2025, a competition was opened for five Assistant Professor positions and, in July, another competition for four Associate Professor positions.
In the short term, a competition is also planned for a position as Full Professor and a second competition for two positions as Assistant Professor.
