Von der Leyen meets with Trump on Sunday

The President of the European Commission announced today a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Sunday to discuss the 30% tariffs imposed by Washington on European imports.
"Following a good phone conversation with the President of the United States, we agreed to meet on Sunday in Scotland to discuss transatlantic trade relations and how to keep them strong," Ursula von der Leyen wrote on the social network X.
Trump said the likelihood of the US reaching a trade deal with the EU was "50-50" as the August 1 deadline approached.
Trade tensions between Brussels and Washington intensified with Trump's announcements of tariffs on the EU, which initially amounted to 25% on European steel, aluminum, and automobiles and then became reciprocal tariffs on the EU bloc, set at 30% after a period of negotiations.
The EU's trade spokesman, Olof Gil, confirmed on Thursday that the European Commission will adopt a €93 billion list of countermeasures to be applied by the EU to the US starting August 7th if no agreement is reached by then.
Brussels prefers a negotiated solution with Washington, having already proposed zero tariffs for industrial goods in trade between the two blocs.
