US central bank announces interest rate cut

The Federal Reserve (Fed, the US central bank) cut its benchmark interest rates on Wednesday 17 by a quarter of a percentage point for the first time this year, as expected by the market, due to a weaker labor market .
The Fed cut its benchmark interest rates to the 4%-4.25% range and foresees two additional cuts for 2025.
Only the new Fed governor, Stephen Miran, whose appointment was pushed through by President Donald Trump – a critic of the central bank – voted against the decision and sought a greater interest rate cut.
The Fed's monetary committee also appeared more optimistic about US economic growth, with a forecast of 1.6% for this year, compared to the 1.4% projected in June.
