Trump prepares emergency declaration as new legal basis for taxing Brazil, says agency

The government of US President Donald Trump is preparing an emergency declaration as a new legal basis to impose tariffs on Brazil, Bloomberg reported on Friday (25), citing as sources people informed on the matter who were not identified in the report.
According to the report, there is still no final decision on the measure, which is being assessed as necessary to impose the 50% tariff on imports of products from Brazil threatened by Trump, since the United States has a trade surplus with the South American country.
One of Bloomberg's sources said representatives from the Office of the United States Trade Representative briefed them on plans for a separate emergency declaration related to Brazil in meetings with U.S. congressional officials this week.
On so-called Liberation Day, April 2, Trump imposed tariffs on imports from 184 countries and territories and the European Union (EU) under a national emergency declaration, which was challenged in court.
Since then, the Trump administration has held meetings with other governments to lower the announced tariffs. This week, it announced agreements with Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia .
In a letter sent to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the 9th, Trump announced that he intends to impose a 50% surcharge on the import of Brazilian products starting August 1st and claimed that former President Jair Bolsonaro is a victim of judicial persecution in the trial at the Supreme Federal Court (STF), on charges of an alleged coup attempt after the 2022 election.
He also stated that "secret and illegal" decisions by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes regarding American big tech companies represented attacks on the freedom of expression of American citizens and that Brazil adopts unfair trade practices against the United States.
Days later, the Office of the United States Trade Representative announced that it had launched an investigation into Brazil's trade practices.
