The price of this food has skyrocketed this week and is already the 'champion' of the year

The price of broccoli has soared in the last week, and this food has already seen the largest percentage increase since the beginning of the year, according to DECO PROTeste's weekly price monitoring.
" In just one week, between August 13th and 20th, the price of broccoli increased by 59 cents per kilo (up 17 percent) . One kilo of this vegetable can now cost 4.14 euros ," can be read in the information provided by the consumer protection organization.
Now, "with this week's increase, broccoli is now the product in the DECO PROteste food basket whose price has increased the most in percentage terms since the first week of the year ."
All things considered, " between January 1st and August 20th, the price of broccoli rose by 1.35 euros per kilo (up 48 percent) ," whereas "on January 1st of this year, a kilo of broccoli cost 2.79 euros."
Despite everything, the price of the food basket has eased
Despite everything, the price of the food basket monitored by DECO PROteste registered a decrease last week, after two consecutive weeks of increases :
"This week, on August 20, it cost 241.30 euros, 3.01 euros less (1.23%) than the previous week . This is still one of the highest prices since the consumer protection organization began monitoring the price of this basket of essential goods ," the note released reads.
Furthermore, "at the beginning of this year, on January 1st, the food basket cost 5.13 euros less (2.17 percent less). In January 2022, when DECO PROteste began this analysis, consumers spent 53.60 euros less (28.55 percent less) to buy exactly the same food products."
Which products have increased the most?
Last week, between August 13th and 20th, "in addition to broccoli, the products whose price increased the most in percentage terms were curly lettuce (up 8%), tuna in oil (up 8%) and sliced bread without crust (up 6 percent) ."
"If we compare this week's prices with those of the first week of the year, on January 1, 2025, the biggest percentage price increase was seen, in addition to broccoli, in products such as ground roasted coffee (up 36%), eggs (up 28%) and oranges (up 24 percent)," it can also be read.
Since DECO PROteste began this analysis on January 5, 2022, the largest percentage increases were in beef for cooking (up 91%), eggs (up 81%) and ground roasted coffee (up 73 percent).
It should be noted that since January 2022, DECO PROteste has been monitoring the evolution of prices of essential food items, analyzing, every Wednesday, the total cost of a basket, based on prices collected the previous day in the main supermarkets with online stores.
