Marcelo calls for solidarity with refugees

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, considered this Friday that “this is the moment to show solidarity with the refugees seeking Portugal”, calling for actions in this sense and rejecting “selfish views of the community”.
In a message published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, on the occasion of World Refugee Day, the Head of State highlights that “the persistence and worsening of conflicts, the climate crisis, the complex and dangerous interrelationships between these problems, as well as the recent cuts in humanitarian aid are forcing, in this year of 2025, more than 122 million people to abandon their homes in search of safety and protection”.
Highlighting that the United Nations (UN) calls for solidarity with refugees, the President of the Portuguese Republic joins this appeal.
“ This is the moment to show solidarity with the refugees seeking Portugal , honor their stories and show unwavering support for their plight,” the message reads.
The Portuguese head of state warns that this solidarity is expressed “through actions, including the creation of dignified reception conditions and the promotion of protection policies”.
“Only in this way can we prioritize a principle of shared humanity, to the detriment of selfish visions of the community,” he adds.
