Higher electricity bills: Aneel triggers red flag level 2 for August

The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) reported this Friday (25) that the electricity bill will become more expensive in August with the activation of the red flag level 2. With this, an additional R$ 7.87 will be charged for every 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed.
The red flag in effect for July, at level 1 , provides for an additional fee of R$4.46 for every 100 kilowatt-hours consumed. In a statement, Aneel stated that the additional fee next month is necessary due to the increased costs of electricity production due to the lack of rainfall.
"The scenario of below-average inflows across the country reduces generation through hydroelectric plants. This situation increases energy generation costs due to the need to activate more expensive sources, such as thermoelectric plants," the statement said.
According to the IBGE, the electricity bill was the main reason for the 0.33% increase in the July inflation preview. The Broad National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15), considered a preview of official inflation, was released this Friday (25). In June, the index had increased 0.26%.
Tariff flags on the electricity bill- Green flag: favorable conditions for power generation. The tariff is not subject to any increase;
- Yellow flag: less favorable generation conditions. The tariff increases by R$1.88 for every 100 kWh;
- Red flag - level 1: more costly generation conditions. The tariff increases by R$4.46 for every 100 kWh;
- Red flag - level 2: Even more costly generation conditions. The tariff increases by R$7.87 for every 100 kWh.
