Writer Dacia Maraini says Gaza is suffering a 'very serious massacre'

Italian writer Dacia Maraini, one of the greatest intellectuals in Europe and the world, said that the Gaza Strip is the victim of "a very serious massacre" and emphasized that "it is typical of populism to look for enemies to take revenge on."
"There is a very serious massacre in Gaza. We are witnessing a regression, a return to that archaic and instinctive propensity for war, with the search for an enemy to be eliminated through revenge," says the intellectual, highlighting: "this should not happen in 2025. Civilization consisted of the transition from revenge to justice. And now we are back to revenge."
The statement was made by Maraini, who is in Rio de Janeiro, UNESCO's World Book Capital, at the invitation of the director of the city's Italian Institute of Culture, Marco Marica, for a series of meetings on the occasion of the publication of her novel "The Long Life of Marianna Ucrìa" in Brazil.
"With these winds of war blowing dangerously, there is a return to the logic of revenge. And as is characteristic of populism, they seek an external enemy to fight, to divert attention from what is happening in their own countries," he added.
Commenting on what is happening between Iran and Israel, Maraini recalled that the war against Nazifascism was the only one that brought true liberation, but "nothing positive can be expected from wars of aggression."
"We must work more on the economic plan and on sanctions. The international court must not be subject to vetoes, but must have greater freedom and decision-making power," concluded the Italian.
