In an official note, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also remembers the Portuguese cinematographer for his work in Paris, in "opposition militancy and involvement in academic struggles", as well as his work with "many French directors", such as Claude Chabrol, and in 'blockbusters' (box office hits) such as two films from the 'Harry Potter' saga.
"His international career is unparalleled among Portuguese cinematographers, not only in the breadth and variety of his filmography, but also in the distinctions (a BAFTA, two Oscar nominations)," emphasizes the President of the Republic.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also recalls that, "not being the only Portuguese with success in Hollywood", Eduardo Serra "was the one who most decisively contributed to the light and image" in the films he worked on, highlighting, in particular, his role in the film 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'.
The head of state also recalls the collaboration with Portuguese filmmakers, such as Fernando Lopes and José Fonseca e Costa, and expresses to the cinematographer's family the "sorrow and gratitude of the Portuguese people."
Cinematographer Eduardo Serra has died at the age of 81, the Portuguese Film Academy announced.
According to a source close to the family, Eduardo Serra died on Tuesday, the 19th. The location was not specified.
Born in Lisbon in 1943, Eduardo Serra is the most international of Portuguese cinematographers, having been nominated twice for an Oscar, for the films 'The Wings of Love', by Iain Softley, and 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', by Peter Webber, which earned him the BAFTA award from the British Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The Government today "deeply" lamented the death of Eduardo Serra, "the most international of Portuguese cinematographers", praising "his unique career".
