Walter Chicharro is a candidate for the leadership of Tourism in the Center

The elections for the leadership of Turismo Centro de Portugal will have a third candidate, after Luís Tadeu and Rui Ventura have already presented their candidacy for the elections scheduled for March 27. He is Walter Chicharro, current deputy elected by the PS and former president of the Municipal Council in Nazaré. “My work during 10 years at the Nazaré Council speaks for itself. The Nazaré brand is now a global brand, recognised all over the world”, the current MP told our newspaper, adding that this work “is a great introduction to Turismo do Centro”. Two years ago, he presented a “pre-candidacy” for the position, in an interview with our newspaper. “I have never hidden the fact that I have a very special passion for tourism, a passion that has been growing even more exponentially since I took over as Mayor of Nazaré”, he said at the time. Now, Chicharro, as we have learned, has been challenged by the party’s national structures to come forward and tonight he admitted it on his social media. “After much reflection and listening to the encouragement of mayors, businesspeople and agents in the sector, I accepted the challenge of running for president of Turismo do Centro. I believe that the Centro Region has unique and unparalleled potential in the national and international tourism scene,” he wrote. “Together, let’s build an even stronger and more cohesive Turismo do Centro,” he added.
The elections on 27 March were called following the death of the previous mayor, Raul Almeida, due to illness in December. The first to present his candidacy was Luís Tadeu, mayor of Gouveia, followed by Rui Ventura, mayor of Pinhel. Both are mayors elected by the PSD in the district of Guarda and cannot run again in the next local elections.
