“ How to attack from the right positions in forest fires”
UC Exploratory
At 3:00 p.m.
Filipe Pereira Alvelos, researcher and professor at the University of Minho's School of Engineering, is the guest speaker at the session that continues the Mathematics Afternoons - Odd Conversations series, with the theme " How to attack from the right positions: optimization in forest fires ." Forest fires have a significant impact on human life and ecosystems. Reducing their negative impacts necessarily requires the contribution of several disciplines, including mathematics and, in particular, optimization. Filipe Pereira Alvelos will address the topic, beginning by demonstrating how a given area can be represented by a graph to which relevant information is associated to simulate fire propagation. This simulation is based on the concepts of paths and shortest paths, concepts that will be introduced with reference to other areas in which they also play a central role, such as logistics or telecommunications. Participation is free and no prior registration is required.
